Event Guidelines

 

Suggested Materials (Please clearly label ALL tools) Only human powered tools are allowed (Exception - cordless drills for form assembly)

  • Sketches and clay model of your design

  • Recommend one shovel for every two team members

  • Recommend one rake for every three team members 1 or 2 pounders (or wacker or tamper) Maximum 1 bucket per team member Wheelbarrow to transport sand, rolling garbage can to safely store shovels, rakes etc.

  • Carts and wagons take up a great deal of space and are not recommended for interior plots due to space Form supplies Sculpting Tools-various trowels, brushes, kitchen utensils

  • Remember - water is the only legal binder for the sculpture

  • One prop may be used to enhance design, not to support the finished sculpture No color or other additive may be added to the sand

We encourage you to use many sources when brainstorming themes and design ideas for your sculptures. Coloring books, How to Draw books, Toys, etc. Several sand-sculpting books and websites are also available for strategies, building techniques, etc. A couple of specific resources are listed here. Rookie teams may borrow a copy of The Art of Sandcastling, please call Bethany at (503) 736-3200 if interested.

Event Preparation

Practice Site Schedule

Please only sign up for TWO practice shifts. After all teams have signed up, then additional shifts may be chosen. There are no "private" or "closed" practice shifts (For private practices, each team must find their own location and sand). Teams may sign up for any of the 3 shifts.

Judging Criteria

Teams are judged on three categories, on a scale from 1 to 5 points in each. Judging panel may include sand masters, architects, graphic designers, artists and local celebrities. Official judging begins at 4 p.m., however judges may begin looking at sculptures and talking with teams about designs before 4 p.m

Fundraising Tips

Tips and Tools When you register for Yoshida's Sand in the City, you will have a personal web site created for you. The password you create when registering will allow you to go in and make changes to your web page. To enter your site, click on the "Enter my Headquarters" link, and enter your login and password information.

Use your webpage to:
